How to Use a Removable Grab Bar and Shower Seat

Well, hello there! My name is Maria Lindbergh, and I'm an occupational therapist. I help people find the best bathroom safety equipment to fit their needs.

Over time, I’ve had people ask me questions like, “My knee surgery is coming up. Do you know of a good grab bar that I can use while I’m healing that also has the ability to remove it when my knee is ok?”

And for the longest time, I didn’t have a good recommendation. (FYI, I’ll never ever recommend suction cub grab bars. Learn why I despise them here.)

But that’s changed now! Today, I'm excited to show you a couple of products from the HUG Collection by Ponte Giulio. We've got the HUG Removable and Folding Grab Bar and the HUG Removable and Folding Shower Seats.

Keep reading this article or watch the video below to see how the grab bar and shower seat work!

How Does a Removable Grab Bar work?

You may be asking, Maria, why would I want a removable grab bar and shower seat in the first place? Great question.

The answer is convenience. Attach the grab bar when you need it and remove it whenever you want!

Let’s talk about how the removable grab bar works: First, remove the wall cover from the mounting plate. To mount the grab bar, slide the HUG Removable Grab Bar on the mounting plate, and flip the switch underneath the grab bar to lock into place.

Voila! Instant grab bar!

When you remove the grab bar, reverse flip the switch underneath the grab bar, slide the grab bar up and off of the mounting plate, and place the wall cover on top.

Benefits of a removable grab bar

Grab bars are helpful because they help you stay safe when standing up and sitting down in this shower and by the toilet. They help you feel confident when moving around and taking care of yourself.

A grab bar is really convenient when you have visitors come to your home. For instance, if Dad or Grandma comes over, they've got a little something something to hold on to so they don't fall.

When your visitor goes home. You can easily remove the grab bar and put it in storage or move it somewhere else in your home, like another bathroom. These removable grab bars make it convenient for you to help your family.

And as a side note, you'll be seen as the thoughtful family member who cares about safety and well-being!

How Does a Removable shower seat work?

The HUG Removable and Folding Shower Seat is another must have in the bathroom. Put it on by removing the wall cover, sliding the seat down on the mounting plate, and flipping the switch underneath the seat to lock it into place.

That’s it!

The shower seat takes no time at all to remove either. Flip the switch underneath the seat, slide the shower seat up and off the mounting plate, then place the wall cover on the mounting plate.

Personally, I prefer to keep the shower seat folded up when I'm not using it. That gives me extra space to move around in the shower. But that's just me. You do whatever works for you!

When to use the removable grab bar and shower seat

The thing that I loved the most about the removable grab bar and shower seat is that it's truly my choice when I put them in.

I can use them to help me recover after an elective surgery, like knee surgery, an accident, or illness. They're also great to use during pregnancy and postpartum.

And when I’m feeling better, I can remove the grab bar and shower seat at my convenience!

As an occupational therapist, I’ve seen a lot of places where a removable grab bar and shower seat would be greatly beneficial.

For example, first floor bathrooms are ideal in case the homeowner has a hard time going up the stairs to the second floor bathroom. Plus hotel rooms and senior living communities could instantly become more accessible by adding mounting plates in every bathroom.
