Allow me to tell you a little story about Linda (not her real name). Linda had a knee replacement surgery gone wrong. She got an infection in her knee which meant a longer hospital stay, and eventually she came to rehab where I met her during her first therapy session together. Linda and I went to the bathroom, and she tried to wipe herself like she normally did, but the pain in her knee, and the weakness and fatigue from her long hospital stay, wouldn't allow her to do it.
Linda broke down at that moment. She had these huge tears streaming down her face. And then she told me about how she had let herself go; that she hated relying on somebody else to help clean her up. Linda also felt humiliated like all of her dignity was just snatched away from her.
Although Linda was grateful that I could help her clean up after going to the bathroom, she didn't want that to be her reality. Linda wanted to clean herself like she had done her entire life.
Does this sound familiar?
I'm here to tell you that I've worked with so many “Linda”s. I've had so many people cry in the bathroom and break down over the fact that they couldn't wipe themselves. There have been a lot of tears in this most intimate of spaces that have really tugged on my heartstrings. Linda is one of the many reasons I've made this course to help as many people as possible clean themselves more independently.
I created "Hard Time Wiping? Let's Talk A-booty It!" to make this topic easier to approach with your parents or grandparents. I know I'm not the only one who experienced this awkward conversation with my family member! I made this course for your granny to feel:
Empowered with her ability to clean herself
Like she can keep her time on the privy private
Confident that she smells good
Excited to get out of the damn house
And feel more like herself!
About your instructor
Hi, my name is Maria and I was a caregiver to my grandparents for 12 years. My grandmother, ‘Granny’, told me that she never wanted to live in a nursing home. My mom and I worked as a team to make changes to her home and find local supports to make sure all of her needs were met.
After Granny died, my grandfather’s dementia worsened. Despite our best efforts to keep Grandpa at home, it came to a point where we recognized he needed two people to help him 24 hours a day. It was a difficult decision to move Grandpa to a memory care unit, but we knew it was the best choice for him to have the level of care he needed.
While caregiving for my grandparents, I went to school and became an occupational therapist. I started my career working in nursing homes, so I know firsthand the everyday struggles people have living in these facilities. I noticed that some of the patients I worked with would get better and take care of themselves more independently at the facility. However, when they returned home, they would become rehospitalized or reinjured and return to the facility worse off than how they left.
The reason why those patients were not successful living in their homes is that their homes were not set up for them to independently care for themselves. I saw a need to fill in the gap and prepare the home so it was safe for people to age in place.
This led me to create my business, Toilet Talk, for people to create beautiful and safe bathroom. I offer bathroom solutions, resources, a blog, videos, a free newsletter, and an online course on my website, “Hard Time Wiping? Let’s Talk A-booty It!”
The course is meant for people who struggle with wiping after toileting, their family members, and caregivers. People may find themselves having a hard time wiping for many reasons like being unable to twist their back to reach their bottom or they feel back pain. “Hard Time Wiping? Let’s Talk A-booty It!” teaches toilet techniques and four options to clean up easier after using the bathroom. It helps people maintain their privacy and empowers them to clean up more independently.
Based on my experience working with people who struggle to wipe, I know that figuring out how to clean their booties is a large piece of the puzzle for living at home for a lifetime instead of a nursing home. You're wiping out (pun intended) the need for caregiver assistance, skin infections, urinary tract infections, falls, and pressure sores. This course is a vehicle for people to drastically improve how they take care of themselves and keep their ability to live at home.
You now have the perfect resource to stop:
Being afraid to talk about this sensitive topic with your doctor and family
Shaming yourself for “letting yourself go” or becoming a burden on your loved ones
Feeling hopeless over losing your independence and the possibility of moving away from the comfort of your home
And begin
To be independent with personal hygiene again, and
Feeling confident in your ability to take care of yourself!
